Today I am going to share some of my Fall Salt Dough Cookie Crafts with you. These are so simple to make and are perfect projects for kids as well as adults. Smaller children will need supervision preparing them but they will have a great time painting them.
Here is the salt dough recipe that I use:
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1-1/2 cups warm water
Combine the flour and salt.
Add the water gradually until the mixture has a consistency like putty.
Knead the dough for about five minutes. Be sure the ingredients are thoroughly blended.
Roll the dough on a floured surface, to 1/4-inch thickness.
Cut with cookie cutters. (Dip cutters in flour before cutting to prevent them sticking in the dough.)
Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for about 1/2 hour at 325 degrees (until light brown).
***please note***
I prefer to drill the holes in my cookies after they are done depending on what project I am going to use them in, but if you would rather not drill them
you can make the holes with a straw before you bake them.
Supplies Needed:
Craft Paint Asst. Colors (I used Apple Barrel Brand)
3 Dimensional Paint Asst. Colors (I used Scribbles Brand)
Coated Craft Wire
Craft Ribbon
Cinnamon Sticks (1-3 inch size)
All Purpose Glue
Misc. Supplies Needed:
Drill
Wire Cutters
Needle Nose Plyers
Paint Brushes
Aluminum Tart Pan (or similar for paint)
After the cookies are cool and completely dry I paint them all over front and back with plain dollar store brand All Purpose Glue to seal them. When they are dry I add a second coat of glue. Then I paint them using Apple Barrel or a similar craft paint. Once they are dry I add highlights to the cookies with Scribbles or a similar brand of 3 Dimensional Paint. For the pumpkins and leaves I painted around the edges with 3D paint and around the leaves. For the Ghost I used 3D paint on the faces and the little pumpkins I added to the bottom of them. When they are completely dry I drill holes on each side about 1/4 inch from the edge for the garland and 1 hole in the top about 1/4 inch from the edge. I also drill a hole in the center of each piece of the cinnamon sticks (If they are too long you can cut them to size with wire cutters).
For the garland:
I measure out and cut two 3 inch pieces of wire and two 5 inch pieces of wire. I start with whichever cookie I want in the middle and put one end of the 3" wire through the hole from the back to the front and then I curl it by wrapping it around needle nose plyers. Then I add a couple of pieces of cinnamon sticks to the wire and then I attach it to the cookie on the left and then the right in the same manner. On each of the end cookies I attach the 5 inch wires to the cookies by curling it and add cinnamon sticks and then making a loop for hanging on the other end. When I am done attaching all the wires to the cookies I tie 5 inch pieces of ribbon on the wires between the cookies and on each end.
For the ornaments:
I measure out and cut one 6 inch piece of wire. Then I add the cinnamon sticks (on the ornaments I cut them down to about 1 inch) that I have drilled a hole in. I insert one end of the wire in from the back to the front and curl the end with needle nose plyers then insert the other end of the wire in and curl that end. To finish I tie a piece of ribbon around the wire.
This microwave recipe is from Ruby Glen but I have never tried it this way.

What You Need

Decorations, Glitter, Paint, Beads, Etc.
Knead the dough and roll it out to cut out shapes with cookie cutters (just like if you were making sugar cookies). Place them on a microwave safe plate and microwave on high for about 2 minutes. Paint and decorate as desired. Most of all, be creative and have a lot of fun!
